Lost Worlds Return

A planned feature of the website has always been to act as a haven for all the old zones, areas, worlds, and cities of these old MUDs. These virtual worlds will start to come online in three different phases. Even when all three phases are complete, we will continue to accept and track down more areas before they are lost forever.

Phase One

This will involve a simple repository of areas, the raw data accessible, and tagged or described when possible with the date the area was created, by whom, what MUD it first appeared on, and what codebases included it, as well as whether or not you can use the area for your own MUD (and if so under what conditions or license).

Phase Two

This is where we begin to transition to more of an exploratory setting, where you can (from your browser), explore an area, as you select available exits.

Phase Three

The last planned phase where we also "load" the objects and creatures from the zones, allowing visitors to really get a sense of what the area was like.

Ideas for the Future

After phase 3 is complete. We'd like to look at providing visual representations of the individual areas, and perhaps even worldmaps of the various MUDs. There may be simple colorcoding with ASCII, or even graphics and icons to represent different types of places or terrain.

We look forward to providing this exciting feature to the site. It will be another big step forward in realizing the mission and goal of the MUD institute.
